Do you think we still have the sharing spirit?

Hi all,

With mushrooming of private trackers and ratios becoming the standard way to judge a person do you think the sharing spirit still prevails?

Most often we see people boasting about their ratios can ratios be a scaling factor? is this not the result of the self imposed "Ratios", people want to do a showoff?

Do you think those who shout at the top of their voice about the high price of the contents(music, movie disks) will actually buy it when price comes down?

If we go back some years and take a look at the Napster Years, In those days people was doing it for the community and each person got what he want, but today sites are made invites only and those who are late to the community are finding it impossible to get into these sites.

Why do private tackers prohibit their uploads from being shared with others? why not give the original up-loader his/her due credit and share it with others? is this not what we all came together?

I feel when we see of "I" instead of "We" in a community then the purpose of the community is not there.

I request our members to comment freely on this, these things have been bugging be for some point of time so decided to post it here.

I expect to see some solid response from our members.

Ive only been torrenting for 12 months so i cant really comment on the napster years, but from everything ive read and learnt about p2p i have decided i am against the private sites and trackers. people have different methods for seeding their torrents. for example if i dload a movie and there are thousands of seeds and i require my bandwidth for other things then i wont seed the file until the number of seeds has dropped. where as on private sites as far as im aware this sort of seeding is forbidden and results in a ban. i think the sharing spirit is still there ,but the private community forces it which isn't exactly wrong, but people should be allowed to make choices as to how they do things.

They don't enforce ratios, I don't support them just because they don't have ratios but the way they treat the community. Why not the others? Are they glorifying them selfs?

This thread is like "you have something to say about the spirit, rant about the P2P or something to say about the community in general you can do it here" type. You need not reply to each of my questions.

Maybe some of these people that boast about their share ratio don't actually have one, maybe they shout about it because there embarrassed that they don't share enough.

private sites are for people with super connection speeds i feel, those on slower connections dont stand a chance of surviving on private sites because they cant upload fast enough to keep them happy.
my isp is limiting my upload speeds to no more than 30/kbs and on a `5mb connection i should be upping more than that, and i can hardly ring them and say "oih stop throttling my uploads, i want to share torrents" although it would be really cool to do that
so according to articles i have read in the past these sort of speeds are not good enough for private sites, unless ive misunderstood these articles.
i do see the benefits to private sites, ie- theres no fake files, nasty trojans and such.

Well, I was a member of a couple of private trackers before they got shut down , but I did enjoy ratios, it required people to share instead of just take take take.

Even though there are no ratios here, I still find myself seeding alot more than leeching

that is what i was talking about, if allowed people will seed(at least most of them will do) then why enforce ratios? why make ratios a judging factor?

the spirit of sharing is very much dying out,thats why i prefer to use private sites,that way you can be sure the seeder aint gonna take off and leave you hanging at 99.8% like ive seen on many of the open torrent sites

Personally I give back what I can, of what I leech, without overloading my machine, to the point where I can't do too much of anything else. The big problem I'm really starting to notice, with private trackers, is you have to apply to be able upload torrent......makes it difficult to giveback some things that you may have that others don't...........

It's there all right! I'm seeding and leaching, and so the world does go around
