Default Any feelings towards UDP trackers?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UDP_tracker

According to this, the UDP tracker will reduce bandwidth overhead, which should reduce network congestion.

Supposedly, uTorrent 1.9 will be able to handle UDP functionality, and, based on my understanding of UDP, the more people that use UDP makes it more effective. Therefore, once most people migrate over to a uTorrent client that can support it, all these UDP trackers may become functional

I like the thought of UDP trackers, and if it does reduce bandwidth overhead, then that is definitely a good thing.

So far, the only tracker I can think of that also offers a UDP variant is The Pirate Bay. However, until people start widely using UDP, it probably won't be worth it. I would wait until a stable release of uTorrent 1.9 comes out before that.

Yes, this is definetly something to look into, I am checking this out for the stable release of µTorrent 1.9, because this wont be too beneficial with the betas.

Since the bit torrent client only contacts the tracker once every 15 minutes or so, the bandwidth usage difference between a http message (using TCP) and a UDP message is insignificant from the client perspective. It really doesn't matter.

But in the tracker end it will make a difference. Especially on a busy tracker that handles thousands of client requests per second. From the tracker perspective, a move to UDP tracker connections could allow a tracker to handle several times the workload it does now.

Meaning we might start seeing light at the end of the tunnel regarding TPB's frequently overloaded search?

Trackers, database, search and web servers all run on separate machines at TPB. Optimizing one aspect won't affect the other aspects of the service.

This is ThePirateBay server arrangement.
